Z is for Zero: Themed Activities

How can I make ZERO a theme? Maybe have a "do nothing" day? For me, that is neither enticing nor possible.

In the book, Zero to Hero, Zero was mistaken for the letter O, for a donut, for a bagel and for a wheel. So one possibility is to create a circular theme and include zero as an example. For example, a collage of round things.

Or you could create a picture of several donuts, for example, and hide a zero in the midst of the picture and use the scene for "I Spy".

If the child likes coding, then learning about ones and zeros to create codes for computer programing is another option to consider.

Zero waste can be the focus of a discussion on the environment and recycling matters. See what creative ideas your class or family can come up with to promote 'reduce, reuse and recycle' with an aim toward zero waste.

Oh! Zero tolerance is another good subject matter for discussion. The application of that would be very dependent on the types of situations occurring in your life at the time. For example, zero tolerance of bullying or of cheating or of going on someone's property or of coming late? However, there are times life just is what it is and we need to take a zero tolerance approach to something so this is a legitimate consideration for zero.

Zero is also a character in MegaMan for the Capcom fans out there who might like to have fun watching the series or drawing the characters. Apparently he is an android and elite maverick hunter but personally I do not follow the series to be able to comment on its suitability for all ages.

Zero by definition is meant to represent nothing and yet if you add it to the end of any number you automatically multiply it tenfold. The more zeros you have, the greater the value so it is clearly more than nothing. However, if you have zero apples and you are hungry...or zero power on your phone and you need to make a call, then the zero represents a problem in your life.

There are many approaches to take to zero but overall I would consider if it represents nothingness or if it adds value to what comes before it...or both! Interestingly, even if you decide it represents zero/nada/zip/nothing, it still has meaning and a place in the world! So it still has value!
