Y is for Yellow: Themed Activities
🌞Yellow is the colour of sunshine! Well, maybe not in reality but in our depictions of it, we use yellow. It is well known to be a cheerful colour that brightens our day just as the sun does. So if we want to have a theme day based on the colour yellow, incorporating the sun in only natural. Expanding it to a broader discussion on weather is an option.
😄The next thing I think of for yellow is a smiley face. Yes, they are done in a multitude of colours but yellow is the most standardized depiction of a happy face. Again, it is cheerful. A yellow smiley face can represent YES, happy thoughts, something good, something positive. Along with a thumbs up, it is one of the most popular emojis and there are also many variations of it such as a smiley face with sunglasses! Cool!
🌟A star is next. I think of the song, "Twinkle, twinkle little star" and of the encouraging words, "You're a star" when someone does something well.
🍌As for foods, a banana is first to come to mind. It could represent crazy fun times as you 'go bananas' or it could represent a song like 'five little monkeys' or it could represent snack time.
🥇🏆A gold medal or a golden trophy represents first place. Yellow is often chosen to represent gold as the colours are similar. It is a symbol of excellence and success in accomplishing first place in an activity.
🌻While there are many flowers that are yellow, buttercups, roses, tulips and more, the sunflower is the first one that comes to mind as yellow is the primary colour for this tall flower that produces yummy seeds that many enjoy as a snack.
🐥I was thinking of 'five little ducks' but this chick is yellow too. It represents new life as it is a classic to see a chick hatch from an egg. 'Old McDonald had a farm" is another song choice as is 'Rubber Ducky'. Many children love having a rubber ducky floating in the bathtub with them! Usborne books has a series where a little yellow duck is hiding on each page for you to find.
🍋Lemons make lemonade which is refreshing and something sweet that is made from something sour. which offers a good life lesson on what to do when problems come your way (sour situations)...make something good come of them! While not as popular today, having a lemonade stand is still an acceptable way for little ones to learn about entrepreneurship and marketing and make a little cash too!
🚦Caution signs are yellow because it is the colour that eyes process quickest (fact) and it is also vibrant to attract your attention to the imminent danger. Do a community hunt to find out where caution signs exist and why in order to promote safety awareness.
💡lightbulbs are also depicted as being yellow. They not only represent enLIGHTenment but they also represent having a bright idea! When a symbolic lightbulb goes on, a person is able to understand a concept (the AHA moment) or has developed a new and creative idea that will solve a problem. Bravo!
While the list has ten ideas, I offer a bonus one in conclusion...
🐝Bees are partly yellow too as is their golden honey that is ever so sweet! Many children really enjoy learning about beehives, their dance to lead other bees to the flowers and how they work together and take something so simple to make something so sweet. I think it is wonderful to go to a farmer's market in the summer and try different types of honey, perhaps honey still on the comb to let the child(ren) in your life experiment with the variations of one of nature's best treats!
Have a cheerful, yellow day!
