W is for Water: Themed Activities

Water: As a fundamental necessity for life, water is highly esteemed. Without it, we cannot survive. But more than a basic requirement, it is also the source of many fun activities that you may enjoy with the child(ren) in your life.  Here are a few suggestions but the list is extensive! Be creative!

  1. Add rice or beads or coloured water to a water bottle and seal it to make a sensory bottle or shaker.
  2. Bob for apples in a bucket of water.
  3. Saturate a sponge and wring it out in another bucket 20 feet away. Which relay team will reach a set limit first? (ie. fill a glass to the brim)
  4. Learn to swim.
  5. Add food colouring to glasses of water and add in white carnations and wait. Watch how they change colour.
  6. Practice a thorough hand-washing routine. You can use a GloGerm kit to find out if you managed to get rid of all the germs!
  7. Learn about the water cycle.
  8. Do a science experiment to test different paper towel brands. Which one is the most absorbent when placed on a spill of 1/4 cup of water?
  9. Make a floating boat using empty water bottles and test it out in the tub or on a lake.
  10. Try a new water sport like kayaking, wakeboarding or diving.
  11. Create an art piece with water colours.
  12. Drip coloured waterdrops onto a coffee filter to make patterned art.
  13. Experiment on what makes something sink or float on water.
  14. Sing If all the raindrops were Lemondrops and Gumdrops  or Singing in the Rain.
  15. Set up a rain gauge in the garden and track the amount of rainfall we get in 24hours.
  16. Paint with water on a wall or blackboard and watch it magically 'disappear' (dry).
  17. Have fun with sprinklers or at a splashpad on a warm day!
  18. Experiment to see if you can lift an ice cube with a string? Yes, if salt is poured on top.
  19. Water plants in the house or garden. Sometimes you can actually watch the leaves perk up as they absorb the water!
  20. Create a fun bath-time routine. Include scoops, sieves and bubbles to add to the fun.
Did that inspire you to try something fun based on the theme of "W is for Water?" Personally, my favourite choice would be to visit a waterfall or walk on the beach. Maybe they could be added to the list too! Enjoy!
