N is for The NOSE Book: Library Notes

There is a game where you put a plastic nose on the card of the matching animal called Who Knows Whose Nose?. It is a game for 2-4 year old children that is a great beginner game. Another game called WhoNose? is similar to Headbanz.  It is for 6+y and each player is to hang a facial card from their nose and ask questions to guess who it is from a selection card. A player has to get three correct to win.  Pin the nose on the clown is also a nose game. Operation has a light up nose if you accidentally touch the sides while 'operating'. Pencil Nose requires you to wear special glasses with a pen attached to the nose and the other person has to guess what you are drawing 'with your nose'! These are samples of some of the games available to people with an interest in noses.

Pinocchio has a video game, a board game, a movie and a book. Pinocchio helps children learn about his special nose that grows when he lies.  Who else has a special nose?  I think now is the time to look at the book chosen for today, The Nose Book, and see who has special or unique noses in this story.

This is a Dr. Suess book, written by Al Perkins and illustrated by Joe Mathieu.  When I looked it up I found a 'reading' of the book that was actually a song. I love when that happens because adding music is a great tool to help children read and remember the words of a book and adds variety to the options about how the content is absorbed. Another aid is to have words that rhyme and that is also a feature of this book.  The words are simple and have a rhythm and flow.

The graphics are colourful and energized with the main characters being cartoon animals. The book bonds us together in recognition that we all have a nose but that noses come in a variety of shapes and sizes that are unique to the individual. All different, but all useful/good. It is a fun discussion about noses that you will surely enjoy with the child(ren) in your life!

Build on it with activities to identify a stuffed animal or a family member just by their nose. Take close up pics of noses and practice drawing a variety of noses. Put fun noses on Mr Potato Head or make a playdough person with a funny nose. Teach a social skill such as how to blow your nose properly or why not to pick your nose in public! Sing Head and Shoulders, Knees and Toes which ends with the nose or read other books such as Animal Kisses or Whose Nose is This?

Whatever your approach, it is good to know about the nose so have fun learning!
