R is for Jeremiah learns to Read: Library Notes
Here is another great book, Jeremiah Learns to Read. I choose this because it is such an encouragement for people of every age that it is never too late to learn a valuable skill in life! Stereotypes exist but they should never limit your possibilities. Keep reaching for the stars!
Start with the positives....What did he already know how to do? (Match the phrases to the pictures)
Recognize the variety of ways a person is talented!
Is Jeremiah young or old? How do you know? He is old enough to be married and have a family.
Did anybody stand in his way? No.
"Fine. Learn to read!" (brother, wife, sheepdog)
How do you find help to learn a new skill?
Do you support the people around you as they try to learn new things? How do you show support?
What did he do to get ready to go out?
Make a listing of things and circle what he did do and cross out what he did not do according to the book. Make your own list of what needs to be done each day before going outside.
How did he plan to learn to read? Was it a good plan in your opinion?
Put his steps in order. Go to school. Express desire. Learn ABCs. Study. Practice. Listen. Learn words.
What was his surprise for his wife? Ask a multiple choice question.
a. He read her a poem
b. He taught her to read
c. He brought her flowers
d. He brought home a new puppy
What impact did he have on his wife because of what he did?
(He made her want to learn to read too)
How are you going to impact someone in your life to make them want to learn to read too?
This book helps us practice many skills like questioning, evaluating, summarizing, identifying, matching, sharing ideas, reading, listening and speaking too!
Remember: A teacher is also a learner and a learner is also a teacher.
We all have something to offer the world!
