M is for Mouse (Includes Micky and Minnie): Themed Activities

The first book I thought of for M was "If you give a Mouse a Cookie" and so I made my theme day based on Mice.  However, when I came to write this, I didn't know what to say so I brainstormed other 'M' words like messy, me, monkey, meerkat, mountain, magic and maze but then thought of many famous mice, like Mickey and Minnie, Mighty Mouse, Jerry (Tom and Jerry), Speedy Gonzales (The Looney Tunes), Miss Bianca (The Rescuers), Gus and Jaq (Cinderella), Roquefort (The Aristocats), and Stuart Little.

What came next? The nursery rhyme Hickory, Dickory, Dock, the mouse ran up the clock and books like The Lion and the Mouse, Mouse Moves House and Country Mouse and City Mouse as well as those based on the characters listed above.

Other than retelling and dramatizing the stories of these mice, what other activities connect to mice?  Try some of these activities or add to the list with ideas of your own!

1.  Have a Disney Tea Party with our Disney Mouse friends!

2.  Play the board game called "Mousetrap"

3.  Complete mazes just like a mouse in a maze

4.  Time yourself running a race.  Are you faster than Speedy or Mighty Mouse?

5.  Compare country life and city life.  Which do you prefer?  Mice can make their homes equally well in both environments but is one better than the other? Research and discuss.

6.  Play the game, "Be Quiet as a Mouse now" and see who can last the longest without making a sound

7.  Practice your counting with the nursery rhyme, "Hickory Dickory, Dock" Get an analog clock and practice telling time to the hour (1:00, 2:00 etc)

8.  Play a game of "Cat and Mouse" with one chasing the other.  If in a larger group, you can have one 'mouse' hold a 'piece of cheese' and the cat has to catch mice until it finds the one with the cheese.  You can also do this in a circle like Doggie, Doggie, Who's got your bone?

9.  Make the 'M' sound.  Write the letter 'M' in both upper and lower case.  Make a list of 'M' words.  Write a tongue twister with as many 'M' words as possible.  Whatever fits your level

10.  Make a cute little mouse with pompoms, glue, googly eyes and a yarn tail or make a Minnie Mouse pet with a black pompom head and two small black pompom ears and a bow
